The Opsera is a statistic RealGM Executive Editor Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, August 25th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes. 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.42 Thanks to three grand slams (a record) on Thursday, New York has the highest OPS (.806) in baseball. 2. (4) Boston Red Sox - 4.19 Boston took three out of four from Texas, allowing them to swap spots with the Rangers in our rankings. 3. (3) Philadelphia Phillies - 4.17 Who would have thought that Vance Worley could be the fourth Philadelphia pitcher with double-digit wins? He recorded his ninth win on Tuesday against the Mets. 4. (2) Texas Rangers - 3.88 The Rangers once-insurmountable lead in the American League West is now just two games over the Angels with a weekend series on tap. 5. (7) Atlanta Braves - 3.78 The young relievers of the Braves will be a nice postseason story this October. 6. (5) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.71 The Brewers have left the Cardinals in the dust and they are open to waiver trades as the August 31 deadline nears. 7. (6) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.69 Believe it or not, Milwaukee could still catch Philadelphia for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. 8. (10) Los Angeles Angels - 3.58 On life support just a few weeks ago, the Angels have kept the Rangers from going on autopilot. 9. (9) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.54 The Rays could hang with the Yankees and Red Sox in 2012 if they add some above-average bats this winter. 10. (8) San Francisco Giants - 3.45 The defending-champions are falling out of playoff contention. Luckily, they have six games left against the Diamondbacks to jump back into the race. 11. (T14) Detroit Tigers - 3.38 12. (T11) Cincinnati Reds - 3.29 13. (13) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.26 14. (T11) Chicago White Sox - 3.25 T15. (19) Washington Nationals - 3.21 -- (T20) San Diego Padres - 3.21 T17. (T14) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.20 -- (22) Los Angeles Dodgers - 3.20 19. (17) Oakland Athletics - 3.17 20. (T20) Colorado Rockies - 3.13 21. (16) Cleveland Indians - 3.09 22. (18) New York Mets - 3.05 23. (24) Pittsburgh Pirates - 2.94 24. (23) Florida Marlins - 2.88 25. (25) Kansas City Royals - 2.76 26. (26) Chicago Cubs - 2.71 27. (27) Seattle Mariners - 2.67 28. (28) Baltimore Orioles - 2.45 29. (30) Houston Astros - 2.31 30. (29) Minnesota Twins - 2.14

In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, August 18th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes. 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.40 They have a slim half-game lead over the Red Sox in the American League East and are getting healthy as Boston deals with injuries. 2. (4) Texas Rangers - 4.14 Having taken three out of four against the Angels, the AL West is theirs for the taking. It would take a Mets-like collapse for the Rangers to miss the playoffs at this point. 3. (3) Philadelphia Phillies - 4.13 They are on pace to win 106 games and perhaps their second World Series in four years. 4. (2) Boston Red Sox - 4.12 Boston will be feared in October, but injuries to David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis could slow them down over the next week. 5. (5) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.79 The Cardinals are one spot ahead of the Brewers in our rankings, but they trail Milwaukee by more than six games in the National League Central. 6. (7) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.69 Home is a nice place for the Brewers, who have a .746 winning percentage at Miller Park. 7. (6) Atlanta Braves - 3.66 The Braves have the unfortunate luck of sharing a division with the Phillies. Put them in any division other than the NL or AL East and they are in first place. 8. (10) San Francisco Giants - 3.48 The playoff hopes of the defending champions are dwindling. The Wild Card is nearly out of reach and Arizona has built a 2.5 game lead in the NL West. 9. (9) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.47 Joe Maddon and the Rays are not going to give up even though they will not be invited to the postseason dance. 10. (8) Los Angeles Angels - 3.44 The Angels need to win the AL West in order to qualify for the playoffs. With 37 games left, they are six games behind the rival Rangers. The bright side? They do have six games let against Texas. T11. (13) Cincinnati Reds - 3.30 -- (15) Chicago White Sox - 3.30 13. (12) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.28 T14. (16) Detroit Tigers - 3.25 -- (T19) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.25 16. (18) Cleveland Indians - 3.23 17. (11) Oakland Athletics - 3.21 18. (14) New York Mets - 3.19 19. (T19) Washington Nationals - 3.17 T20. (17) San Diego Padres - 3.11 -- (T21) Colorado Rockies - 3.11 22. (24) Los Angeles Dodgers - 3.09 23. (T21) Florida Marlins - 3.01 24. (23) Pittsburgh Pirates - 2.99 25. (25) Kansas City Royals - 2.75 26. (27) Chicago Cubs - 2.66 27. (26) Seattle Mariners - 2.63 28. (28) Baltimore Orioles - 2.35 29. (29) Minnesota Twins - 2.22 30. (30) Houston Astros - 2.21

In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through the Thursday, August 11th games: The rankings from last week are in parenthesizes 1. (1) New York Yankees - 4.38 The Red Sox still own the Yankees this season, but run differential (+172) has allowed New York to remain at the top by a wide margin for several weeks. 2. (2) Boston Red Sox - 4.18 Boston has actually scored nine more runs than New York, but their pitching staff has surrendered three dozen more runs in 2011. 3. (3) Philadelphia Phillies - 4.11 They have won 11 of 12 since acquiring Hunter Pence, who is hitting .375/.409/.650 with three home runs and eight RBI this month. 4. (4) Texas Rangers - 4.06 Remember when Michael Young was a good as gone? He is hitting .335 this season, good enough for the third-best average in the American League. 5. (5) St. Louis Cardinals - 3.75 The Cardinals, four back of the Brewers in the National League Central, do not look very strong as October approaches. They have lost four of six to Milwaukee this month and there are another six head-to-head battles remaining. 6. (6) Atlanta Braves - 3.67 Where would the Braves be if Jason Heyward had improved on his strong rookie campaign? His batting average is down sixty points and his on-base percentage has dropped eighty points in his second season. 7. (8) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.58 The Brewers are making the best of what is their best chance to make a long playoff run before Prince Fielder leaves via free agency. 8. (7) Los Angeles Angels - 3.57 If their bats get hot in October, they have the pitching staff to make a surprise run at the World Series. 9. (10) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.45 Tampa Bay would be in first place if they were in the AL Central. Instead, they are a distant third in the AL East. 10. (9) San Francisco Giants - 3.42 The acquisition of Carlos Beltran has been a disappointment thus far and a trip to the disabled list is possible. We should wait until the postseason, however, to come to a final verdict. 11. (15) Oakland Athletics - 3.33 12. (T11) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.30 13. (T11) Cincinnati Reds - 3.27 14. (13) New York Mets - 3.26 15. (21) Chicago White Sox - 3.25 16. (14) Detroit Tigers - 3.18 17. (22) San Diego Padres - 3.17 18. (20) Cleveland Indians - 3.14 T19. (T16) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.12 -- (19) Washington Nationals - 3.12 T21. (18) Florida Marlins - 3.09 -- (23) Colorado Rockies - 3.09 23. (T16) Pittsburgh Pirates - 3.01 24. (24) Los Angeles Dodgers - 2.97 25. (25) Kansas City Royals - 2.79 26. (26) Seattle Mariners - 2.68 27. (27) Chicago Cubs - 2.64 28. (28) Baltimore Orioles - 2.35 29. (30) Minnesota Twins - 2.29 30. (29) Houston Astros - 2.25
